Happy Valentine’s Day!
The boys and I are busy making our favorite cookies for some friends and I thought I would share the recipe with all of you.
These are the perfect sugar cookie for cutting into shapes and decorating for absolutely any holiday. We use the recipe over and over throughout the year. A dear IRL friend of mine shared the recipe at a Christmas party years back, and ever since these cookies have been a hit for every occasion.
I asked her if I could share the recipe with all of you and she said that her Great Grandma would be so happy to know that it’s being passed around the blogosphere! So, here you are. My sweet friend, Kendra’s Great Grandma’s Sugar Cookies!
Great Grandma’s Sugar Cookies
2/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 egg
4 tsp. milk
2 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
Cream shortening, sugar, and vanilla. Add egg and beat until fluffy. Stir in milk.
Mix dry ingredients and blend in cream mixture. Divide dough in half. Wrap in plastic and chill for 1 hour.
Keep dough in fridge until you are ready to use it.
Flour surface. Roll to 1/8″ thickness. Cut with cookie cutters. Bake at 375 for 6-8 minutes.
(I prefer an aluminum baking sheet with parchment paper for baking cookies, which usually adds to baking time. I bake mine for 10 minutes.)Cool on baking rack.
Sugar cookie icing
2 cups powdered sugar
1/2 to tsp vanilla
2 tbsp butter
1 to 2 tbsp milk (to desired consistency)
Beat together all ingredients, divide into portions, add food coloring, and decorate.
Happy Valentine’s Day from our family to yours!

I just made these last night on a whim, but with a few alterations. I ran out of Vanilla Extract the last batch of cupcakes I made, so I used Lemon Extract instead. Sooo good!! Then I added a little of the lemon extract to the icing and it was a total Lemon Sugar Cookie! It actually tasted really close to the Lemon Girl Scout Cookies. Really good!

Amanda, that sounds heavenly! I love lemon and I’m totally gonna try your take next time. These cookies are pretty versatile. I love that they stand up to the tampering!
