What to Expect: Cooking with Kids

What can you expect when you’re cooking with kids?

1. Kids won’t always agree with your recipes.

2. They will forget to wash their hands. A lot.

3. There will meat sauce and it will splatter.

But mostly?

You can expect to find a sparkle in the eyes of your child as they master a life skill that will last forever.

You can expect to instill confidence and independance in your child.

You can expect that a love of cooking will be ignited.

You can expect that messy kitchen to be the best part of your day.

*******

My son had always loved to get in the kitchen with me.

It’s a memory I pray he cherishes as much as I do.

It’s a memory worth capturing.

Somewhere along the way I picked up homeschooling two boys and blogging. When I'm not scrubbing toilets or answering endless questions, I'm usually here, over sharing it all! My writing is always honest, sometimes sarcastic, and never perfect. I hope to keep my kids from seeking adult therapy. I know. Pipe dreams...You can find me as @TheMommyMess on Twitter and on Facebook.

just the other day i was telling my hubs that i need to figure out ways to let Lovie help me in the kitchen since she’s very much into the “I DO IT! I HELP, MAMA!” stage. :)

  3. you captured this memory so beautifully! Just perfectly. I love your photos and how you describe giving the a life skill and great memories. I really need to lighten up on my kids in the kitchen policies. A mess is a mess and messes can be cleaned up.

  11. Hee! Love this!

And you’re so very right! There’s the mess and the lack of wash (eewww!) and then more mess, but mostly it’s magic.

(So much like the rest of childhood, yes?)

I love the “topic” that you chose to capture!

The other day when I was cooking, my 9 year old son yelled: “What is that smell? Are you cooking puke!?”
    Sigh.
