Professional Mothers: An Open Letter to Linked In

TWIMC:

I recently attempted to create an account with your website, Linked In. When I began the process of signing up, it only took a few minutes for me to realize that my profession was not a choice.

You see, I am just a mom.

I am the manager of our home and family.

I manage our bank accounts, pay our bills, and plan our meals.

Monday through Friday, I wear the hat of teacher for my two boys, as we are a homeschool family. I hand pick curriculum to meet the needs of both of my children individually. An exhausting amount of time, love, and dedication goes into this task, but I embrace the challenge.

Because, I am just a mom.

I’m a cook, nurse, doctor, personal shopper, caregiver, and housekeeper. Each day crumbles without the proper time management skills it takes to run a successful business. But, I can do it.

Because, after all, I am just a mom.

I do not have an assistant. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts we are not able to hire any more employees. So, I must handle the needs of everyone in my home by myself. But, I pull it off.

Because, I am just a mom.

I have one child with special needs. After 13 years of trying to figure him out, I like to think that I am an “unlicensed” behavioral and occupational therapist. Each day brings challenges, but I am up for the task. I have to be.

Because, I am just a mom.

I am a spiritual leader in my home, as my husband does not know the Lord yet. Sometimes, this is discouraging and hard to accomplish, but I do my best.

After all, I am just the mom.

Maybe you’ve noticed the recent media buzz about moms? Mothers in the media today have a strong political and social influence. They are strong brand ambassadors and a major online presence.

Mothers have a voice.

I’m an aspiring writer, blogger, wife, mom, sister, daughter, friend, woman of God, daughter of the King, and bride of Christ.

But, Linked In is just for professionals.

Do you think it’s possible to open up a catergory for women like me?

Professional mothers.

We have a voice, and I think it’s the loudest one you’ll hear.

Linked to Pour Your Heart Out

Somewhere along the way I picked up homeschooling two boys and blogging. When I'm not scrubbing toilets or answering endless questions, I'm usually here, over sharing it all! My writing is always honest, sometimes sarcastic, and never perfect. I hope to keep my kids from seeking adult therapy. I know. Pipe dreams...You can find me as @TheMommyMess on Twitter and on Facebook.

  1. Oh yes! Agree Agree Agree. I wrote my own rant a couple of years back about something similar, I think it was the Stimulus package that was only for “working” adults. WTH?

  2. It can be so, so frustrating to have what we do as moms minimized. UGH.

  4. As a mom you are a professional. People really should list it as a job.

  5. Amen. This is one of the reasons I haven’t joined Linked In. I know I should, but it just TICKS ME OFF that being “a mom” isn’t considered a profession.

    • Oh, Missy! We are such kindred spirits. It always seems like we’re feeling the same thing at the same time! I’ve signed on, not once, but twice with Linked In, b/c I would like to a have a profile in the hopes of freelance opportunities and writing. BUT? Each time, I get pissed that it makes me feel inadequate that I’m not ALREADY one of those things, and then I get even more pissed that being me isn’t enough. Motherhood is a profession! Damn it! Each of the two times I’ve attempted to join, I change my mind. Well, really I back out, b/c I can’t decide how to categorize myself. WTF?

(I guess I’m still not over it. LOL!!)

  6. You go girly!!! You are so much more than ‘just a mom’ anyone who is a mom, knows this . . . must be a man who created the categories (I know that wasn’t very nice, sorry)

  7. I understand what you’re saying but on the other hand … I don’t know why you would want to join, or network on, Linked In for non-career purposes. I know motherhood is your career but you are not looking for a new position, right? And if you really want to join LinkedIn (which I think is a total waste of time) you can do so as a professional blogger. Don’t shoot me … I’m just a mom too! :)

  9. Love, love, love this and without us moms, really, where would society be? I often say that if in actual paying jobs, people did all that we did and were treated the way we are, people would be quitting left and right.
